Family Fights Off Home Invaders Together

A Miami Florida man turned the tables on home invaders who threatened the lives of his grandmother and great-grandmother early Thursday morning.

According to Pherrick Thomas who shares the home with his two elderly family members, someone knocked at the back door at around 2 a.m. Thursday morning.

When Thomas opened the door he found a young lady he had once been in a relationship with, 23-year-old Georicka Mathes, standing outside.

“We were talking for a second, because it’s 2 in the morning, I’m trying to catch up, and the next thing you know a man with a rifle ran up talking about, ‘Give me everything,'” Thomas told Local10 News.

The man with the rifle, 26-year-old Marquan Humphrey, and Mathes forced their way inside the home and began assaulting the two elderly women.

Apparently, Thomas comes from a heritage of survivors as his grandmother fought back fiercely with a loose brick, giving him the opportunity to wrestle the rifle away from Humphrey.

“I turned the rifle around just in time,” he said. “I had enough strength from seeing them hit my grandmother to actually shoot the man (Humphrey).”

A nearby patrol officer heard the shots and responded to the scene immediately, but arrived just after Mathes and Humphrey fled in a vehicle.

However, the two where picked up by police, arrested, and charged with armed robbery. Humphrey was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated for his gunshot wounds.

A second man was seen lurking in the back yard of the home, but police where unable to track him down.

The gravity of the situation was not lost on Thomas, who remarked the fight for his life was also a fight for the lives of his family.

“I felt that if I was to die right there, they would have killed my grandmother and great grandmother. Lord forbid.” He said, shaking his head, “God forbid.”

The night was all about the difference of strength between him and the home invaders.

“They weren’t strong enough, that’s all I can say,” he said. “The devil wasn’t strong enough tonight.”
