Sometimes a day off of work is necessary for your own sanity. Sometimes it is also necessary to defend your home from a burglary. 52-year-old Kurt Baima just happened to have a day off when his Clearwater home was broken into on the morning of November 30th.
The incident took place at around 9:30 in the morning just as Baima was sleeping. He was awakened by a loud pounding on a door that Baima had previously boarded up. At first, according to Baima, he didn’t think that the noise was a person trying to break in, but decided to take his 9mm Beretta with him to investigate, just in case.
Baima said that he has owned his gun since 1990 and usually just target shoots, but when he checked around his house and saw what (or rather who) he saw, he was very thankful for his tool.
Who he saw was 31-year-old William Kahle attempting to break into his house. As Baima and Kahle first locked eyes Baima knew that he had to do something quickly to defend himself and his property. And so he did. Baima fired several rounds at Kahle, an unknown number of which struck his target, but it was enough to force Kahle to the hospital with critical injuries after authorities were called.
Authorities also combed the scene of the shooting and spoke with Baima about his involvement. Reports do indicate, however, that Baima has been nothing but cooperative with the police and there are not likely to be any charges filed against him in this case.
So besides a shook-up community as well as a pretty shook-up Kurt Baima there were no other injuries to report besides our criminal who can look forward to spending his time recovering in the hospital followed by the local jailhouse.
