Florida Burglar Attempts to Rob Homeowner, Calls for Daddy Instead
A Lake Worth woman became an unfortunate witness to a fight outside of a home, late Monday that ended with one man being shot and another repeatedly being stabbed, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office records state.
The woman called a friend at some time after 10 p.m. Monday saying that she’d been punched by a man named Gary Steven White outside a rental community his father manages on Federal Highway. White’s father, who shares his son’s first and last name, told authorities his son began arguing with the woman.
Moments after the phone call, the woman’s friend heard a noise outside White’s home on North M Street, just west of North Federal Highway.
The man opened his door and saw two men outside his fence, trying to break inside. The younger man was the 47-year-old White. White then proceeded to enter the home, despite the resident’s orders to stay outside.
It was at that point that the resident shot White in the abdomen. White screamed for his “daddy,” records state.
“Daddy, he shot me,” White reportedly yelled.
His father came running. The older White and the resident struggled over the gun, the resident said, and eventually, the resident threw down the firearm.
The resident felt a pain in his back. He then realized he was being stabbed, the police report said.
The father grabbed his son, put him in the car then picked up the gun. The elder White told police he did so no one else would be shot.
He drove nearly three miles south to his home near Lantana Road and Dixie Highway and called 911.
White was rushed to Delray Medical Center as a trauma patient for his gunshot wound. The resident, too, was rushed to a hospital for the eight stab wounds Palm Beach County Fire Rescue authorities say he sustained.
White faces charges of attempted homicide and burglary with assault. His arrest report does not specify whether he is believed to have stabbed the resident, but his father, who does not face charges, told authorities he didn’t even know his son had a knife.
Sheriff’s authorities found a bloodied knife on the passenger side of the car in which the Whites had driven south.
As of Wednesday morning, White remained hospitalized, court records indicate. Once he is released, he will appear before a Palm Beach County judge for a bond hearing.
