Wisconsin Changes CCW Reciprocity for Florida

Florida Gun Law

According to the State of Wisconsin, concealed carry permits from Delaware, DC and Rhode Island are now honored and residents of those states may carry legally within the boundaries of Wisconsin if they already have a CCW permit from their home state.

Wisconsin has also approved the use of permits from Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Florida, but only if certain requirements are met.

Florida:

Florida licenses issued or renewed on or after 08/01/2013. Wisconsin DOES NOT recognize Florida licenses issued with the prefixes of W, WJ, WR, WX or WY.

Oklahoma:

Oklahoma licenses issued or renewed on or after 10/01/2018.

Louisiana:

Louisiana licenses issued or renewed on or after 03/09/2015

The state of Wisconsin reports its Department of Justice has worked to contact all other states regarding reciprocity to determine if they meet the requirements of Wisconsin law. The following states can carry concealed with their own states CCW permit:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virgin Islands, Washington, Wyoming.

The only states and US territories not honored by Wisconsin:

Guam, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, American Samoa, N. Mariana Islands, Vermont.

Wisconsin allows permits from these states if special conditions are met:

  • Virginia NON-RESIDENT license only. Virginia resident license does not qualify for recognition in Wisconsin.
  • South Dakota ENHANCED and GOLD LICENSES ONLY
  • Louisiana license ISSUED OR RENEWED ON OR AFTER 03/09/2015
  • West Virginia license ISSUED OR RENEWED AFTER 06/08/12.  This DOES NOT include any provisional licenses.
  • Oklahoma license ISSUED OR RENEWED ON OR AFTER 10/01/2018.
  • Missouri license ISSUED OR RENEWED ON OR AFTER 08/28/2013. This DOES NOT include any provisional license issued by the state.
  • Florida license ISSUED OR RENEWED ON OR AFTER 08/01/2013. Wisconsin DOES NOT recognize Florida licenses issued with the prefixes of W, WJ, WR, WX or WY.
  • Ohio license ISSUED OR RENEWED ON OR AFTER 03/23/2015

As you can see from the list above, the Virginia non-resident permit is accepted, but the Virginia resident CCW permit is not. If you would like to get the Virginia non-resident so you can carry in Wisconsin and a multitude of other states where your CCW permit is not recognized, read here for how to accomplish that.

My ccw permit was issued in Florida 06/13/17 but it has the prefix w. Is it still valid in Wisconsin or not?

Does anyone know why? Mine is also W/17 and expires in 2025.

    Anybody ever figured out why?
I called the state but if course got a recording on their advertised open 7 days a week help desk.

I’m a former Wisconsin resident and I live in Florida. I see Wisconsin recognizes FL Conceal Weapons permits (CWP) issues after 2013 but won’t recognize licenses with prefixes W, WR, WJ, WX or WY. Mine was issued in 2017 with the prefix WX. This is confusing, what kind will they accept from FL and why not WX?

I live in WI. I TOOK A CERTIFIED HUNTERS TRAINING AND RECEIVED MY CC LICENSE THIS SPING 2021. I live in a very rural area and my choices for buying a gun around here are limited. My husband and I are taking a vacation driving down to Fla. Does WI alllow me to buy a 9 mil and 22 in Ky, Ga, or Florida? Or do I have to buy a gun only in WI? Thanks so much.

According to the reciprocity only NON RESIDENT WI licenses have reciprocity so no you can’t carry in FL as a resident of WI. I can’t carry in WI as a resident of FL either.

WTF? Florida CCW is good in 34 states but not WI…we need. NATIONAL RECIPROCITY ACT

Federal law does not allow you to purchase a handgun in any state other than your state of residence. It’s not up to the states.

      • Matt C on October 1, 2022 at 11:43 am

That’s WRONG! I’ve purchased handguns in other states and they ship it to your state of residency.

As a Florida resident with a CCP vacationing in Wisconsin I went online to research the reciprocity agreement. Did not understand the limited reciprocity so I tried calling both Florida and Wisconsin and remained on hold with Florida for over40 minutes and opted for a call back from WISCONSIN which never came.
    Now what?

      • Joanne on December 13, 2022 at 2:33 pm

How did you get that? I’ve asked and called around and no one gives me the same answer. I have a CCW from WI and want to know if it’s legal in Florida?
